Dhimurru is calling for volunteer assistance in processing marine debris from our annual marine debris survey at Cape Arnhem. This survey has been running for 15 years and is possibly the longest running marine debris survey in Australia.
What we require is assistance in separating the debris up into various categories, which we then count and weigh. This data is important to document the increase of marine debris that is landing on the shores of North East Arnhem Land, and also documents changes over time in the type of debris that washes up. This study provides important long term data, which we hope will assist in understanding the nature of the problem and contribute to working towards solutions.
Last year we collected just over two tonnes of debris from the 3.6km survey site, and it takes quite some time to sort it all out afterwards. If anyone has any spare time on Friday 7th Sept, or Monday the 10th to Wednesday the 12th September we would be most appreciative of some assistance.
Please call the Dhimurru office on 8939 2789 if you are interested.
