Traditional owners in Maningrida, 500 kilometres east of Darwin, are campaigning to ban commercial fishing in their waterways.

Julius Kernan, a traditional owner, told the ABC his sons were struggling to catch enough fish to feed their families.

“We’re just upset, they’ve been doing this for too long, and our catch rate is going right down especially for barramundi,” he said.

“I’ve got three sons who hunt every day, they’re having problems [catching fish] and it’s happening right in front of us.
